Battery and Range

Choose between two lithium battery options to suit your riding style. The 360Wh battery provides a solid 50 miles, while the 540Wh long-range battery extends your journey to 70 miles. For optimal range, pedal along with throttle power to stretch your ride up to 30% further. The Tailwind’s efficient battery management ensures you’re ready for long rides without the worry of running out of power.

Throttle only range:  Using your Wisper bike on throttle only will reduce your range by up to 30%. If your bike has been upgraded so it works on the throttle only, we still suggest pedalling when you are able to do so. Use the throttle only function when you need to rest or to help you pull away when setting off.

How It Works

When you order a Wisper full-throttle eBike, we’ll arrange for it to be tested by the DVSA and approved as an L1e category 250W Low Powered Moped. This process can take 2-8 weeks, as the bike needs to be inspected at an approved MVSA centre for Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) tests.

As of October 2025, wait times are approximately 10-12 weeks from your order date due to the time it now takes to book a slot with the DVSA for type approval.

At Bike Yard Online, we can now deliver Wisper e-bikes without the throttle so you can start riding straight away instead of waiting 2–3 months for delivery. Once your bike is with you, contact us and we will arrange a DVSA slot to fit the legal throttle at a later date. When the time comes, just send the bike back and we will handle everything. If this suits you, please get in touch before ordering to confirm compatibility.

These tests ensure that the eBike complies with current Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations. After the test, we receive a British National Type Approval certificate, which is specific to your bike’s frame number. This certificate is valid for the bike's lifetime and doesn’t require renewal, unlike an MOT.

When not using the throttle, the bike functions like a standard eBike, with no impact on regular EAPC features.

To meet Type Approval requirements, bikes must have front and rear lights operated from a single switch. As of 2025, the following bikes are eligible:

The Regulations

L1e electric bikes are classified as Low Powered Mopeds, adhering to the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle Regulations of 1983, updated in 2015. The key requirements are:

• Must have pedals capable of propelling the bike.
• The electric motor must not exceed 250 watts and cannot power the bike beyond 15.5mph.

Once Type Approved, these bikes can legally be ridden on UK roads and private land at speeds up to 15.5mph using just the throttle.

Costs and Warranty

We offer a complete certification service for £299 with new bikes purchased from us. This includes the test fee, software upgrade, transportation to the test centre, and a £45 fee to extend the warranty to cover throttle use.

If you're taking your Wisper bike abroad, it’s your responsibility to check the local legal requirements. Wisper can re-restrict your bike for a £55 fee at their HQ in Kent and de-restrict it when you return.

Please Note:
Using the throttle can reduce your e-bike’s range, so for maximum distance, it’s best to use it only when needed.

Wisper e-bikes are typically delivered in 2-6 working days from your order date.
