Some Wisper models offer a choice between a cadence or torque sensor. If available, this will appear as an option above the quantity selector.

How It Works

When you order a Wisper full-throttle eBike, we’ll arrange for it to be tested by the DVSA and approved as an L1e category 250W Low Powered Moped. This process can take 2-8 weeks, as the bike needs to be inspected at an approved MVSA centre for Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) tests.

These tests ensure that the eBike complies with current Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations. After the test, we receive a British National Type Approval certificate, which is specific to your bike’s frame number. This certificate is valid for the bike's lifetime and doesn’t require renewal, unlike an MOT.

When not using the throttle, the bike functions like a standard eBike, with no impact on regular EAPC features.

Exclusions

To meet Type Approval requirements, bikes must have front and rear lights operated from a single switch. Currently, models like the Tailwind Trail, Tailwind City, and Wayfarer Mountain cannot be approved due to the lack of lights, but we’re working on a solution to offer these in the future.

The Regulations

L1e electric bikes are classified as Low Powered Mopeds, adhering to the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle Regulations of 1983, updated in 2015. The key requirements are:

• Must have pedals capable of propelling the bike.
• The electric motor must not exceed 250 watts and cannot power the bike beyond 15.5mph.

Once Type Approved, these bikes can legally be ridden on UK roads and private land at speeds up to 15.5mph using just the throttle.

Costs and Warranty

We offer a complete certification service for £300 with new bikes purchased from us. This includes the test fee, software upgrade, transportation to the test centre, and a £45 fee to extend the warranty to cover throttle use.

If you're taking your Wisper bike abroad, it’s your responsibility to check the local legal requirements. Wisper can re-restrict your bike for a £55 fee at their HQ in Kent and de-restrict it when you return.
